MoreThe word is out! If you visit the Maker's Mark Distillery, where every bottle of our bourbon is handmade, you will see a new bottle on the counter. Maker's White is what we call "white dog" in the bourbon whisky world. It is Maker's Mark, but it isn't quite bourbon. You see, the white dog is the Maker's Mark mash that has been produced and distilled but hasn't been put in the new charred oak barrels and aged (5-1/2–7 years for original Maker's Mark). You still get that same corn-heavy, less-bitter taste with the red winter wheat in place of the rye, but without some of the woodsy, sweet finish.
The label of the Samuel's Family Legacy bottle features the likenesses of Bill Samuels, Sr., who put up the brand's first barrels in 1954; Bill Jr., who took over as President in 1975; and Rob, who assumed the role of Chief Operating Officer earlier this year. Proceeds from the sale of the Legacy bottles will benefit 21st Century Parks in Louisville and Habitat for Humanity.
Since the Samuels family has remained stubbornly committed to hand-making their bourbon, Rob thought it would be a nice touch to hand-sign the labels for this special bottle, signifying that the family's attention to handcrafting continues unchanged into the next generation. (Of course, Bill, Jr. and Rob have signed limited numbers of bottles in the past, but never an entire run of a commemorative bottle. And 18,000 is a lot of labels to sign!)
"I thought becoming Chairman Emeritus meant I really wouldn't have very much to do," said Bill, "but have you ever seen a stack of 18,000 of anything? Rob's going to sign them, too, so at least I'll have company in the writer's cramp department."
At Maker's Mark, we really don't spend much time worrying about modern technology. We make our bourbon in 200-year-old cyprus tanks, we print every single label on a hand-operated printing press and we hand-dip every single bottle of Maker's Mark and Maker's 46 in our signature red wax.
On the other hand, when it comes to the interwebs, we've always tried to stay current. Thus the reason that we're very proud of the all new Website that you're surfing at this very moment! It features dozens of new recipes and cocktails, an all-new virtual distillery tour, an online "Wax Museum" where you can learn about the history of Maker's Mark and the Samuels family, a newly remodeled Embassy for Ambassadors and a whole lot more.
Our "geeks" took great pains to make sure the new Website works well on a variety of browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, 8 and 9, Google Chrome 13.x, Mozilla Firefox 6.x and Apple Safari 5.x. At this time, the only problem they haven't been able to resolve occurs if you visit the site using Google Chrome on a Macintosh running Mac OSX Lion. Until we figure out how to make those guys play nice, we recommend that you use Safari.
